7-Day Rongai Route Itinerary

  • Altitude: 2,000m to 2,650m

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest
    After completing registration at Marangu Gate, you’ll drive around the mountain to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. Begin your trek through lush forest before reaching Simba Camp on the edge of the moorland.

  • Altitude: 2,650m to 3,600m

  • Time: 6–7 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland
    Trek across open moorland past Second Cave, continuing on a quieter path to Kikelelwa Camp, where you’ll enjoy expansive views and a peaceful campsite.

  • Altitude: 3,600m to 4,330m

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Moorland
    A short but steep hike takes you to the scenic Mawenzi Tarn, nestled beneath the rugged spires of Mawenzi. This is one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful campsites.

  • Altitude: 4,330m

  • Time: Optional acclimatization hikes (1–2 hours)

  • Habitat: Alpine Moorland
    Spend a second night at Mawenzi Tarn for improved acclimatization. Optional short hikes around the tarn and Mawenzi slopes help prepare your body for the summit.

  • Altitude: 3,720m to 1,860m

  • Time: 6–8 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
    Descend through moorland and lush forest trails to Marangu Gate. Celebrate your achievement and receive your summit certificate before heading back to Moshi or Arusha.

  • Altitude: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m

  • Time: 12–15 hours total

  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
    Begin the final push around midnight. Hike steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa. After celebrations and photos, descend to Horombo Hut for rest.

  • Altitude: 3,720m to 1,860m

  • Time: 6–8 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
    Descend through heath and lush forest to reach Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and say farewell to your mountain crew.
